Type of a scam Bank/Credit Card Company Imposter Scam
Attempted phone scam.
I received a call from a man who knew my name, my bank, and my phone number. There is no way a connection could be made from a phone directory as my home phone is in my husbands name.
He told me my bank card was trying to be used for an online gaming site. And he needed my bank card number, and I would assume pin to trace and correct the issue. The call was very convincing as while on hold I was listening to programs and services offered by my bank. I did hang up, but was concerned enough to call my bank.
My bank confirmed there was no issues and no attempted breech on my card. I gave them the phone number from where the call was made.
I then checked my online banking and purchases as this way the only way a person could connect my name, bank and phone number. I have only used my bank card for online shopping 3 times. Each time from Walmart online 3rd party. I did get my items but one of them had to breech the Walmart online security as they had my information.
I contacted Walmart Canada, who told me that because I did not allow the scam to happen, nothing would be done. I did not want anything from Walmart. I wanted to make them aware of the issue so they could do their own internal investigation.
So my bank and Walmart Canada done nothing because I did not allow myself to be scammed.
The number this person calls from is 1 800 723 4173. They will know your name, bank, and phone number. They will tell you there was an attempt to purchase with online gaming. Then ask for your bank card info.
If you call the number back you will get recorded info to stay on the line because call volume is high. You will here options about your banking options (general for all banks while on hold) then you will be told call volume is to high leave a message.
First time I called back it was my bank, the next day RBC, today it’s CIBC. I am including a picture of my Walmart online 3rd party purchase that I believe to be where the s am started.
